Orientation is the required first phase of the three-part certification program for persons interested in serving as certified court interpreters. Orientation is conducted by nationally recognized experts on court interpretation and is open to individuals 18 and older who have a native-like ability to speak and understand English and another language. The workshop provides instruction and materials regarding the different modes of interpreting, professional ethics, legal terms and the court system. This workshop is presented in English with bilingual small group practice exercises. The orientation workshop will be held on March 12-13, 2022, approximately 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. both days. Though it is geared towards immigrant and refugees, we don't turn away any child who is from a low income family and in need of extra help. This is a very rewarding opportunity to play an important role in a child or teen's life. We also are providing free tutoring to adults who are preparing for their U.S. Citizenship interview. You can set your own schedule and times, though most tutoring will take place in the after school hours. We ask that you take on at least 1 student or family and commit to at least 1.5 hours a week. Most of the students we serve live in the South St. Louis area but we serve children throughout the St. Louis City and County area. Must consent to background check. Must be comfortable working in a multicultural environment. No second language skills required. We are also seeking a volunteer to assist with coordinating our tutoring program.
