|  | Policy Update / La Actualización de las Políticas Last month, the White House sent a request to Congress for supplemental funding for the last three months of 2023, which included more than two billion additional dollars for the Department of Homeland Security. This funding would create new misleadingly named, “community-based residential centers” that would essentially reinstate a new form of family detention, increase funds for harmful surveillance, and facilitate the rapid deportations of migrants who are exercising their legal right to seek asylum. Tell your representatives that NO MORE of our taxpayer dollars should be spent intentionally harming our community! ***** Hace un mes, la Casa Blanca mandó al Congreso una solicitud de fondos suplementarios para los tres últimos meses de 2023 que incluía más de dos mil millones de dólares adicionales para el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional. | | September 15 - Defund Hate National Day of Action & Migrantes Unides Creative Action This month, Migrantes Unides will participate in the Defund Hate national campaign. Communities across the country will demand justice for all the suffering immigrants have endured under the Biden administration. Throughout his campaign, Biden pledged to create an immigration system that is just and humane, including ending for-profit prisons. However, after taking office, immigration enforcement, detention, and surveillance have only increased. |

| In St. Louis, ICE contracts the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP) to surveil immigrants as a purported “alternative” to detention. ISAP subjects migrants to different methods of surveillance including ankle monitors, home visits, telephonic monitoring, and required check-ins at the ISAP office, which can be physically, emotionally, and psychologically abusive. ICE and ISAP restrict freedom of movement of our asylum-seeking neighbors and avoid all accountability measures. |

| As part of the efforts to call Biden out on his empty promises and remind the community of our 5 demands for ICE, MU will be joining together at this year’s Balloon Glow in Forest Park on Friday, September 15 at 5pm. The goal of this family-friendly creative action is to raise awareness of the abuses our migrant community faces on a day-to-day basis in St. Louis.
