Policy Update / La Actualización de las Políticas

Over the weekend, members of Congress passed a continuing resolution to fund the government until November 17th and avoid a government shutdown. The continuing resolution did not include additional funding requested for detention, enforcement, and surveillance. While we celebrate this rejection of additional funding, we know this fight is not over. We urge our elected representatives in Congress to bring our demands to defund ICE and CBP to negotiations.

What's New with MU? | Actualizaciones de MU (Migrantes Unides)

On 9/15, IFCLA, Migrantes Unides (MU), and comrades in the fight for migrant justice gathered at the Forest Park Balloon Glow. We joined 84 organizations across 15 US cities in the National Day of Action to #DefundHate. We raised our voices through song, dance, historical testimony, and our own mini Batucada. We distributed over 150 flyers in Spanish, English, Haitian Creole with MU’s 5 local demands for ICE. MU members envisioned, built, and decorated a 7-foot-tall wooden hot air balloon with their slogan: “United Migrants: we want to FLY!” Stay tuned for a Migrantes Unides website coming soon!

El 15 de septiembre, IFCLA, Migrantes Unidos (MU) y sus compañeres en la lucha por la justicia migratoria se reunieron en el Festival de Globos en Forest Park. Nos unimos a 84 organizaciones tras 15 ciudades para el Dia Nacional de Acción para #DesfinanciarElOdio. Levantamos nuestras voces a través del canto, la danza, el testimonio histórico, y una mini-Batucada. Distribuimos más de 150 volantes en español, inglés y criollo haitiano con las 5 demandas locales de MU para ICE. Algunes miembres de MU tuvieron la idea, construyeron y decoraron un globo aerostático de madera de 2 metros de altura con su lema: "Migrantes Unidos: ¡queremos VOLAR!". ¡Pronto vendrá el sitio web de Migrantes Unides!

Since the appointment of current Corrections Commissioner, Jennifer Clemons-Abdullah, 7 people have died in the St. Louis City Justice Center in the past two years (that we know of). IFCLA stands in solidarity with the Freedom Community Center (FCC) in demanding that Mayor Tishuara Jones, Board of Alderpersons, Public Safety Director, and jail administration act immediately to prevent further jail deaths. Our Accompaniment Program relies on various volunteers to provide transportation, historian documentation, and interpretation services to run smoothly. To ensure that all compas are able to take advantage of our service, we are looking for more volunteers. If you or anyone you know is interested, please contact Alicia.

October 18: Conociendo la Migra: Asilo | Educational Workshop in Spanish

Les invitamos a que nos acompañen el 18 de octubre a las 6:30pm para un taller educativo de "Conociendo la Migra". La serie está diseñada para la comunidad inmigrante hispanohablante en la región. Estos talleres tienen dos objetivos: 1) mejorar el entendimiento entre participantes sobre las leyes, asuntos y sistemas que impactan las vidas y derechos de las personas inmigrantes en los EE. UU, y 2) reflexionar sobre qué se puede hacer al respecto. Los talleres se ofrecerán en español. Registrate de antemano.

Join us on October 18th at 6:30pm for an educational workshop from the 'Conociendo la Migra' series. This series is designed for the Spanish-speaking immigrant community in the region. These workshops have two main goals: 1) to enhance participants' understanding of the laws, issues, and systems that impact the lives and rights of immigrants in the United States, and 2) to reflect on what can be done about it. The workshops will be conducted in SPANISH ONLY. RSVP here.

ISPN General Meeting / Reunión General de ISPN

The Immigrant Service Providers Network will meet via zoom on October 25th at 9am. The ISPN's monthly general meetings bring service providers together to participate in cross-collaborative work. ISPN hosts its meetings the fourth Wednesday of the month. Click here to register.
