Dear friend,

We’re happy to share that IFCLA’s newly re-launched Expert Committee will have its first meeting in March! Inspired by the model of Migrantes Unidos, the Expert Committee is a new leadership team composed of individuals who are directly impacted by racist and colonial structures; and who will guide our efforts to become a statewide organization that is inclusive, immigrant-led, and committed to building the power we need to bring about systemic change. As the experts of their own experiences, members will be compensated for their time, perspective, and leadership. 

Why is this important? Historically, many attempts to organize immigrant communities in Missouri have been led by white people who have excluded directly-impacted people of color/immigrant community members from decision-making spaces. As a part of our journey toward becoming an intersectional, anti-racist organization, we recognize this history and the importance of this work being led by immigrant community members.

¡Estamos felices de compartir que el recientemente relanzado Comité de Expertes de IFCLA tendrá su primera reunión en marzo! Inspirado en el ejemplo de Migrantes Unidos, el Comité de Expertes is un nuevo equipo de líderes compuesto por personas que son más directamente afectadas por el racismo y por estructuras coloniales; y que guiarán nuestros esfuerzos para convertirse en una organización a nivel estatal que sea inclusiva, liderada por inmigrantes, y comprometida en construir el poder que necesitamos para provocar cambios sistemáticos. Como les expertes de sus propias experiencias, les miembres serán compensades para su tiempo, perspectiva, y liderazgo.

¿Por qué esto es importante? Históricamente, muchos intentos para organizar las comunidades inmigrantes en Missouri han sido dirigidos por las personas blancas que han excluido las personas de color/les miembres de la comunidad inmigrante que son directamente afectadas de espacios de decisión. Como parte de nuestro viaje para convertirse en una organización interseccional y antiracista, reconocemos esta historia y la importancia de este trabjao liderado por les miembres de la comunidad inmigrante.

Policy Update // La Actualización de las Políticas

Missouri legislative session kicked off on January 4. Over 1,800 bills have already been filed. IFCLA is closely monitoring several of these, including HB 760, which would expand in-state tuition to undocumented students. 

At the federal level, the Biden administration expanded Title 42 to asylum seekers from Haiti, Nicaragua, and Cuba. The Biden administration is also planning to enact an asylum ban that would bar people from seeking asylum in the United States unless another country first denied them refuge. Biden is dismantling asylum and continuing the white supremacist legacy of Trump. We condemn these plans and demand a full restoration of asylum for all who seek safety.

La sesión legislativa de Missouri empezó el 4 de enero. Más de 1,800 proyectos de leyes ya han sido presentados. IFCLA está cercanamente monitoreando unos de estos, incluyendo HB 760, que expandería la matrícula estatal a les estudiantes indocumentades.   

A nivel federal, la administración de Biden expandió el Título 42 a solicitantes de asilo de Haití, Nicaragua, y Cuba. La administración de Biden también está planeando implementar una prohibición de asilo que prohíbe a las personas de buscar asilo en los Estados Unidos a menos que un otro país les negó el refugio primero. Biden está desmantelando el asilo y continuando el legado de supremacía blanca de Trump. Condenamos estos planes y exigimos una restauración enteramente del asilo para todes aquelles que buscan seguridad.

February 15 - Tuition Equity Advocacy Day // Día de Acción de la Equidad de la Matrícula 

On February 15, the Missouri Immigration Policy Coalition is coordinating an advocacy day in Jefferson City for tuition equity. We will be demanding that our legislators remove the racist language in the Missouri budget that requires public colleges and universities to charge undocumented students three times the tuition rate of their peers. February 21 - Speaking Truth to Power: Testimony Workshop // Diciendo la Verdad al Poder: Taller de Testimonios 

Join IFCLA and AIRR for a virtual, statewide workshop on February 21 from 6:00pm-7:15pm to inspire community engagement in the 2023 state legislative session. We will illustrate the importance of testimony in our work to build a Missouri that honors the dignity of all who live, work, and study here. We will also offer strategies for preparing and presenting testimony in the face of a hostile political environment. Sign up here to attend!

The ISPN's monthly general meetings focus on bringing service providers together to connect and participate in cross-collaborative work.
