You might remember that last year we planned a community salsa-tasting competition, but Covid-canceled this event to keep our community members safe. As a part of our 40th Anniversary… this event is back and even better than before. Throughout 2022, we will host a series of Community Cook-Offs, with a different dish as the focus for each. And we believe it’s only right to kick off this series with salsa as the star! 

Join us on Wednesday, March 23, from 5:30-7:30pm at the St. John the Baptist School Cafeteria, for our first Community Cook-Off. Register today to enjoy some delicious salsas, chips and beverages in great company! All proceeds from this event support IFCLA’s mission and enable the growth of our Education, Organizing, and Accompaniment programs, especially as we work statewide. A través del 2022, seremos les anfitriones de una serie de Torneos de Cocina Comunitarios, con un plato diferente como objetivo para cada uno. Y creemos que es necesario comenzar esta serie con salsas.

Conociendo La Migra, Workshop 2 / Conociendo La Migra, Taller 2:

“¿Why do they mistreat me?” Abuse and Criminalization of Immigrants / “¿Por qué me maltratan?” Abuso y Criminalización de Inmigrantes

The workshop series for Spanish-speaking immigrants, "Conociendo La Migra," is back with its second virtual workshop on Wednesday March 9, from 7-9pm. A great amount of undocumented immigrants have reported mistreatment under abusive policies of detention, negligence, and surveillance in the immigration system. Their forced migration is commonly treated as a criminal issue, instead of as a humanitarian crisis. Laws and local prejudices have promoted this abuse. In this workshop, we identify the abuse of immigrants as the product of their dehumanization and criminalization. Migrating is a right. Practicing solidarity is everyone’s duty. Register today!

La serie de talleres para inmigrantes que hablan español "Conociendo La Migra," está de vuelta con su segundo taller virtual el miércoles 9 de marzo, de 7-9pm. Una gran cantidad de inmigrantes indocumentades ha reportado maltrato bajo medidas abusivas de detención, negligencia y monitoreo en el sistema de inmigración. Su migración forzada es comúnmente tratada como asunto criminal en vez de como crisis humanitaria. Leyes y prejuicios locales han promovido este abuso. En este taller, identificamos el abuso contra personas inmigrantes como el producto de su deshumanización y criminalización. Migrar es un derecho humano. Pro Se Asylum Clinic / Clínica Pro Se de Asilo

On March 12, we will be holding a pro se asylum clinic alongside CLAM and MICA. Through these clinics, we have the opportunity to walk alongside compas as they navigate the immigration process. Consider making a donation, or, if you’re interested in volunteering, email our Co-Accompaniment Coordinator, Allie Seleyman.

En marzo 12, tendremos una clínica pro se de asilo junto a CLAM y MICA. A través de estas clínicas, tenemos la oportunidad de caminar junto a compas mientras navegan el proceso de inmigración. Considera hacer una donación, o, si te interesa hacer trabajo voluntario, envía un correo electrónico a nuestra Co-Coordinadora de Acompañamiento, Allie Seleyman.

Abolition on the Ground: Reporting from the Movement to Defund the Police /
Abolición en la Base: Reportando desde el Movimiento para Desfinanciar a la Policía

A world that prioritizes the dignity and health of all is one where detention, punitive enforcement, and deportation do not exist. Don’t miss the conversation, “Abolition on the Ground: Reporting from the Movement to Defund the Police,” on March 1, at 6pm cst, hosted by The Barnard Center for Research on Women. We’ll hear from leading organizers and lawyers across the country about lessons learned from the fight to defund and abolish the police, and the work ahead. This event is only available in English. Un mundo que prioriza la dignidad y la salud de todas las personas, es uno donde la detención, la aplicación punitiva y la deportación no existen. No se pierdan esta conversación, “Abolición en la Base: Reportando desde el Movimiento para Desfinanciar a la Policía,” el 1 de marzo a las 6pm (hora central), cuyo anfitrión será The Barnard Center for Research on Women. Escucharemos de organizadores (as) y abogades de primera línea de distintas partes del país acerca de las lecciones aprendidas de la lucha  para desfinanciar y abolir a la policía, y del trabajo que sigue en el presente y futuro. Check out journalist Kelsey Freeman’s book  “No Option but North: The Migrant World and The Perilous Path Across the Border.” After spending 9 months interviewing immigrants at the US-Mexico border, Freeman shares her reflections about the ordeals that make immigrants leave their homes and the challenges they face when arriving at the border, all while combining personal testimonies from compas alongside recent policy history and research.

Hecha un vistazo al libro de Kelsey Freeman titulado  “No Option but North: The Migrant World and The Perilous Path Across the Border” (“Sin Otra Opción Mas Que el Norte: El Mundo Inmigrante y el Peligroso Camino a Través de la Frontera”).  Luego de pasar 9 meses en la frontera entre México y EEUU entrevistando a inmigrantes, Freeman comparte sus reflexiones acerca de las situaciones que motivan a personas inmigrantes a abandonar sus hogares y los retos que enfrentan al llegar a la frontera, mientras combina historias personales de compas con investigaciones y con la historia reciente de leyes de inmigración.
