Last month, IFCLA’s Ángel Flores Fontánez had the opportunity to join Representatives Cori Bush and Ilhan Omar, and other members of Congress, on a delegation to Honduras and Guatemala to meet with elected officials and local human rights defenders. The purpose of this trip, organized by Witness for Peace, NISGUA, and other organizations in solidarity with Central America, was to learn from movement-builders on the ground in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, who have fought human rights violations, enacted by US intervention, corrupt multinational corporations, and drug trafficking organizations. Delegates listened to human rights defenders share their experiences, lessons learned, and ongoing work.

Ángel describes his own experience as a part of the delegation with these words: “There is nothing good about oppression. But people fighting it are inspiring. It was an honor to spend those 10 days with amazing people that are building a better world in different contexts. I had opportunities to meet, among others, with local communities in Honduras where Berta Cáceres worked with the ongoing efforts of the COPINH to preserve the environment; the Garífuna community where Miriam Miranda and the OFRANEH are defending their afroindigenous identity and land rights; the locals of the Guatemalan resistencias who are fighting corrupt private corporations responsible for genocides; and activists from El Salvador,  the US Congress, from the US-Mexico border, and from several cities around the US.” Stay tuned for more details about this experience!

En el mes pasado, Ángel Flores Fontánez de IFCLA tuvo la oportunidad de unirse a las Representantes Cori Bush e Ilhan Omar, y a otros miembros del Congreso, en una delegación a Honduras y Guatemala para reunirse con miembros del gobierno y defensores/as locales de derechos humanos. El propósito del viaje, organizado por Acción Permanente por la Paz (Witness for Peace), la Red en Solidaridad con el Pueblo de Guatemala (NISGUA) y otras organizaciones en solidaridad con Centroamérica, fue aprender de creadores de movimientos en Honduras y Guatemala y El Salvador, que han luchado contra violaciones de derechos humanos, realizadas por la intervención de los EEUU, la corrupción de compañías multinacionales, y la intrusión de organizaciones narcotraficantes. Les participantes de la delegación escucharon a les defensores de derechos humanos que compartieron sus experiencias, lecciones importantes y el trabajo que queda pendiente.

Ángel describe su experiencia vivida como parte de esta delegación con las siguientes palabras: “No hay nada bueno en la opresión. Pero la gente que lucha contra ella es inspiradora. Fue un honor pasar 10 días con personas fantásticas que están construyendo un mundo mejor en diferentes espacios. Tuve la oportunidad de conocer, entre otras, las comunidades locales de Honduras, donde trabajó Berta Cáceres con COPINH para preservar el medio ambiente; la comunidad Garífuna donde Miriam Miranda y OFRANEH están defendiendo su identidad afroindígena y sus derechos a la tierra; los miembros de las resistencias locales de Guatemala, quienes están luchando contra corporaciones privadas corruptas responsables de genocidios; y activistas de El Salvador, del Congreso de EEUU, de la frontera de EEUU-México, y de varias ciudades alrededor de EEUU.” Sigue en contacto con nosotres para más detalles de la delegación.
